Today we read about Late vs. Early Paleolithic people in EEI. We used the Say Something reading protocol and compared the two cultures using a Venn Diagram. Tonight for homework, I’m asking you to respond to the question in the EEI workbook for lesson 2. Below is the Venn Diagram we discussed today in class.

Students have a bit more homework tonight than the previous week.

**Science**: Please complete the summary questions in the EEI Student Workbook based on Lesson 1 of the EEI Unit we’re on: Paleolithic People: Tools, Tasks, and Fire. If you forgot your student edition or the student workbook, go to the top of the webpage and click on CURRICULUM, then scan down to EEI SCIENCE then slide over to the unit we’re on. You know where this is, since we watched several animations today related to fishing on this same page.

**Math**: Independent Math group you have no homework tonight UNLESS you want to play Rational Number Battleship (We need to think of a better name for this.) using the rational number lines you created in class today. Please finish SPB for 3.2

**Reading**: As always, please try to read at least 30 minutes something YOU want to read. My daughters and I are on book 3 of Harry Potter. Today was busy! We wrapped up our math/art work using rectangles and a review of subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with regrouping. Several students began a new math/art review using protractors and multiplying fractions and mixed numbers. Want to see their work? Stop on by and take a look at the walls. They’re looking more colorful!

Reading. PLEASE encourage your child to continue reading Sea Otter Heroes at home on their devices. We will start looking at book reviews and begin thinking about what essential details should be taken from the Sea Otters book to be used for the trailer we’re producing.

We’re continuing to use Padlet to get students to reflect on their learning and thinking. Here’s an example of what an in-class reflection looks like! Ask your child to explain how Padlet works. They’re catching on VERY quickly. Not all reflections will be public. Some will be between student and myself, too.

We began diagramming sentences today as you might be able to tell by the Padlet above. This is a great way to get students looking at language and taking it apart in order to put it back together. This will help with our study of appositives and independent and dependent clauses. If it’s been a while since you’ve done this, it’s never too late to brush up on your skills. You can go to IXL for some practice pages that also come with answer sheets, too! Remember what an indirect or direct object is or a coordinating or subordinating conjunction? Your students will be diving into this and more soon enough.

Please encourage your child to read Patricia Newman’s * Sea Otter Heroes: The Predators that Saved an Ecosystem. *This book is not yet published, yet it can be found on our class blog. We were asked to create a book trailer for Ms. Newman which ties in nicely with our Wonders unit of writing a book review!

The webpage is password protected. Students know the password. PLEASE do not share this document with anyone else. Ms. Newman has given us exclusive rights to use this manuscript for the book trailer process.

Also, we will ramp up working on another book trailer for Connie Goldsmith for her soon-to-be-published text * Military War Dogs*. This manuscript can also be found on the same password protected page.

**Science/Social Science:** Watch the fishing videos related to our first EEI unit

**Reading**: Read the Newsela article “Little brown bats attacked by fungus while they hibernate” Try the 950 Lexile which is a 6th grade reading level. Remember, you can always level down or up depending on if it seems readable or challenging. Please read for the gist and to answer the annotations in the margins. Please do not respond to the write response or take quiz yet.

**Chapter 1 Final Exam:** We are reviewing and practice testing for chapter 1 test this week. We are using the online version of the practice test which is providing more practice. We are using the online version of the final test, too. This is a different style of testing and is taking longer than a standard paper-pencil test. We will be launching into chapter 2 and fractions this week and integrating more Khan Academy math in as well.

**Writing**: Please complete a total of 3 introduction paragraphs for the narrative prompt we reviewed in class.

PLEASE review your classmates’ sample introductions. I noticed that all the intros that were posted to the Google Classroom Stream were missing a key element: **You also need to “Tell the story of the experience and what you learned from it.” You might want to hint at that in the intro. **

**Maybe try: “It wasn’t a fun moment in my life, but I did learn a few things about myself.”**
